Basing on "Armenian History" of Movses Khorenatsi it is considered to be an Armenian word that means "older man". Later as to pronunciational difficulties the Assyrians and Greek perverted this word and changed it into Abgar. Hyubshman connects this word with Assyrian name Abgar that is absolutely true. ("Arenische Grammatic"- 288).This name is rather spread in Armenia as well as the corresponding surname Abgaryan.
