From Greek name Barbare "barbarian woman", "non-heathen", "foreigner". It is in use since XVI c. in Caucasus (esp. in XIX c. under the influence of Ostrovskiy's dramas). The short and diminutive forms are Varvara, Varo, Varya and Varinka. Now it is a rare name.
